Les rapports de l'homme et des animaux sauvages, au long de l'histoire, ont été complexes. Il a, certes, beaucoup détruit, moins toutefois qu'on ne l'a dit. Il a cherché, sans toujours y réussir, à éliminer systématiquement les grands fauves, le lion ou le tigre, l'ours ou le loup, et les a souvent fait reculer au-delà des limites du domaine qu'il se réservait. Il a massacré inconsidérément, du bison au pigeon migrateur, de l'aurochs à la saïga, ceux qu'il poursuivait pour leur chair, leur fourrure ou leurs plumes, et les a parfois conduits jusqu'à l'extinction, ou à son seuil. Il en menace un grand nombre aujourd'hui par la pression qu'il exerce sur l'environnement. Mais parallèlement s'est construit autour de lui un nouveau paysage vivant : de commensaux, de parasites, d'hôtes plus ou moins bien accueillis en fonction des services qu'ils rendent, qui viennent chercher dans son voisinage, et jusqu'au cœur de ses villes, qu'ils envahissent de plus en plus aujourd'hui, l'abri et la nourriture, en profitant des richesses nouvelles qu'il crée ; ou d'animaux domestiques qui lui ont échappé pour retrouver la nature. Ce cortège humain ne le cède pas, en abondance et en variété, à la faune sauvage qu'il remplace. L'homme, enfin, a pris maintenant conscience de ses excès et de ses imprudences. Il a sauvé, voire ressuscité et réintégré dans leur milieu originel, de nombreuses espèces, et il dispose désormais de toutes les techniques nécessaires pour multiplier ces opérations et reconstituer le tableau primitif. Quelle place laisser à l'avenir, sur notre terre, à cet animal sauvage, plus ou moins protégé et contrôlé ? C'est tout le problème de l'aménagement global de la planète qui est ainsi posé. L'auteur, après avoir retracé, avec une immense érudition, à travers l'espace et le temps, les étapes de cette histoire complexe, le traite dans une perspective éclairée, exempte de l'alarmisme et du sentimentalisme un peu faciles qui l'encombrent trop souvent.
